Keris Bugis Sulawesi
Lurus Sepokal 3 Warna 0820 - A
very good example of a keris from the southern Sulawesi region of Bugis. Handle
in the typical Bugis pistol grip or ulu pangulu
form, is finely carved, and made from hardwood kemuning having
a fine feligree silver pendoko or ferrule to complete. Top sheath or sampir
in Malay, is in the typical Bugis rectangular tebeng forms, and is made from
very well selected burl woods or gembol in Javanese.
Very long, thick and sturdy blade, with a straight or lurus profile but having
an angular or sepokal form blade. The perabots or base features
has very strong Bugis characteristics, having a flat surface with angular edges.
Pamor patterns are arranged in the mlumah technique, having a peak like
formation at the base called ujung gunung, and the pamor wos
utah or scattered rice above, with a jagged circumference pamor called
wengkon unthuk walang, or grasshopper's teeth in Javanese.
With three pamor patterns it is also called 3 warna or tri
colored.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 18th century blade, with late 20th century fittings.
Length of blade: 17.5". Overall length: 21".
