MALAY ART GALLERY'S....House of Keris
Keris Bugis Sulawesi Lurus Topengan Perak.
Sulwawesi Lurus Topengan Perak
- Another fine and
very rare example of a keris from the southern Sulawesi region of Bugis.
Handle in the typical Bugis kerdas and the top sheath is made of finely
selected kemuning woods with natural flashing grains. Bottom stem is made
of woods and is fully encased with finely repousse silver, and extending to
cover the top sheath as a mask or topengan, depicting the "bintulu".
A thick silver ferrule or pendoko completes fittings.
Thick and very sturdy blade with an arcing profile called sepokal in Malay, and a hexagonal cross section, typical of the Bugis styles.
Pamor patterns are rare and showing arrangements in the miring technique. At the base, semi circle formations are called pamor batu lapak or saddle stone, and above it are ovalish or tear drops arrangements called the pamor manggar; or wedding flower arrangements.
The pamor batu lapak is said to protect the owner in times of warfare, most suitable for a warrior, and the pamor manggar is said to enhance the owner's popularity and status.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, the blade, should go back to the middle 19th century.
Length of blade: 13". Overall length: 19.5".
