Keris Jawa Lurus Brojol 0516

Keris Jawa Lurus Brojol 0516 - A very good and rather rare example of a keris from the central Javanese regions of Surakarta. Finely carved hilt in the Javanese Rajamala planner style having a figurine at the top half, is made from hard woods called tayuman. Sheath or wrangka is in the ladrangan form and is made from a single piece of wood or seiras. A repoussed brass outer stem cover or pendok blewah, and a brass ferrule or mendak completes fittings.

Rather short and very sturdy blade rather plain and simple base features or perabots and a rather broad profile, has an overall shape or dapor called brojol. This particular dapor is said to be suitable for a mid wife, as it can assist during birth.

Pamor patterns are arranged in the mlumah technique of the kulit semangko or water melon's skin variations, which is said to enhance the owner's popularity.

Condition: Very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the mid to late 17th century blade, with restored 19th century fittings.

Length of blade: 12.5".   Overall length: 19".
