Keris Madura Luk 11 Pogok Topengan.

Keris Madura Luk 11 Pogok Topengan – A very good example of a keris from the island of Madura, eastern Java. Finely carved handle is made of hard woods and typical of the regions styles. The top sheath is made from well selected trembalo(?) woods with contrasting and flashing grains. The bottom stem is fully encased with finely repoussed silver with the rare mask or topengan at the front of the top sheath. A thick silver and brass ferrule or mendak completes fittings.

Long and very sturdy blade with 11 meandering waves or luks, has well executed base features or perabots that is using the less common kembang kacang pogokan, instead of the the more common elephant trunk like kembang kacang.

Pamor patterns are arranged in the mlumah technique and shows good variations of metals from the different shades of black and white. At the base a semi circular formation called the pamor batu lapak and above it are pamor kulit semangko or melon’s skin. The pamor batu lapak is said to protect the owner in times of chaos, while the pamor kulit semangko is said to enhance the owner’s popularity.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to middle 19th century blade and handle with late 20th century sheath and silver works.

Length of blade: 15.5".   Overall length: 20".
