MALAY ART GALLERY'S....House of  Keris

Keris Madura Lurus Pamor Asihan 0521.

Keris Madura Lurus Asihan 0521 A very good and rare example of a keris from the island of Madura, eastern Java. Fittings in the ladrangan Madura  styles with the handle in the bebondolan form, and top sheath, made from very well selected pelet woods with natural contrasting grains. Wooden bottom stem is encased with a very well repoused brass stem cover or pendok blewah. A finely filigree brass ferrule or mendak, completes fittings.

Very sturdy straight or lurus blade is rather long and with the base having very plain features, has an overall shape of dapor called tilam upih in Javanese..

Pamor patterns are rare and are arranged in the mlumah technique, having a peak like formation at the base called ujung gunung, and contouring patterns above it called kulit semangko or melon skin pamor.
The base cross piece or
ganjar is separated, but the pamo9r lines flows in tandem with the blade. This is also called pamor asihan, sought after for its polarity for the owner.

Condition: Very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the middle 19th century.

Length of blade: 15.5".   Overall length: 20.5".
