MALAY ART GALLERY'S....House of  Keris

Keris Melayu Lurus Carita Selip 0820.

Keris Melayu Lurus Carita Selip 0820 Very good and rather rare example of a short keris from the norther Malaysian peninsular region of Terengganu. Finely carved handle in the pipit teleng or jawa demam form is made from well selected kemuning woods with the top sheath in the less common kusiwo form made from ketengga woods having naturally occurring contracting grains.. Bottom stem is made from angsana woods with tiger's stripe grains, and a pierced through copper ferrule or pendoko to complete fittings.

Very short and straight or lurus blade, having a spine with fullers flanking, and well executed base features or perabots, with an overall shape or dapor called carita in Malay.
The short nature of the blade is also called selip in Malay, and is associated to ceremonial of a boy's use.

Pamor patterns are not contrasting using only black metals called kelingan, which is the characteristics of the carita keris from the region.

Condition: Very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century blade with late 20th century fittings.

Length of blade: 8".   Overall length: 12".
