Keris Palembang Anak Alang Ulu Gading 510.

Keris Palembang Anak Alang Ulu Gading 510 – A rare and very good example of a keris from the southern Sumatran regions of Palembang. Handle is made from ivory and is finely carved in the typical Palembang form of a squatting relief human figurine called the jawa demam. Top sheath in the sabit bulan or crescent moon form is made from dark ebony(?) woods, with the bottom stem made from angsana woods. A repoussed silver ferrule or selut completes fittings.

Thick and very sturdy blade is rather slim and has very well executed base features or perabots and shallow fullers along the middle. The overall shape or dapor is called keris anak alang, and shares similar characteristics with its longer cousin, the keris panjang or executioner’s keris, and shares its high status useage.

Pamor patterns are not using contrasting nickel metals, but more of high carbon iron or steel. This is the norm for the region, not using nickel metals but stronger iron or steel.
From the forging lines, it is arranged in the miring technique of the adeg or standing variation which is said to protect the owner from natural mishaps.

Condition: Very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century.

Length of blade: 15".   Overall length: 189".
