Keris Patani Pandai Saras Luk 9.
Keris Patani Pandai Saras Luk 9 - Another very good
and rare example of a keris from the northern Malaysian peninsular region of
Patani and Kelantan. The handle is in the form of the kerdas,
and together with the top sheath or sampir in Malay, are made from very
well selected kemuning woods with natural flashing stripe grains. The
bottom stem is of angsena woods with tigerís stripe grains.
Very sturdy blade with prominent triangular spine and base features or perabots that are very well executed with the typical Patani features. The overall shape or dapor is called pandai saras in Malay.
Blade is pattern welded but using higher carbon metals without contrasting nickel pamor lines. The stress on practicality from region is shown from the temper mark, or nyepuhan, which is seen from the darker shades at the edges that extend till the base of the blade.
Condition: Very good condition. Aside from a missing petal at the silver ferrule, rest is all in very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the middle 19th century.
Length of blade: 14.7". Overall length: 19".
