Keris Sundang Melayu Riau Luk 7 Kapit 1112.
Keris Sundang Melayu Riau Luk 7 Kapit 1112 – A fine
and very rare example of a long keris called the keris sundang.
More common in the southern Philippine, there are rare examples like this one
from the southern Sumatran regions of Riau Lingga. With strong Malay influences,
the typical handle with the cockatoo pommel is made of well selected kemuning
woods with flashing grains. The top sheath is made from two pieces of hard
woods with traces of bands at the bottom stem.
Very long and sturdy blade with 7 waves or luks, has a deep fuller along
the mid section with the base features or perabots very well executed.
The forging of the blade is also interesting, having the base forged in the
mlumah technique of the kulit semangko or melon skin variations, and
is fused with the top using a “clamp” like technique called kapit.
The pamor kulit semangko is said to enhance the owner’s popularity, while
the entire features of this keris strongly suggest status wear.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to middle to early 19th century.
Length of blade: 20". Overall length: 26.5".
