Keris Sundang Melayu Luk 3.

Keris Sundang Melayu Luk 3 A long and broad keris called the keris sundang, usually of Mindanao in origin, and rarely seen from the Malaysian peninsular regions. Handle is made of hard ebony wood and has brass wire wrappings at the base. Sheath is made of good grained ketengga woods for the top sheath, and hard kenaung woods for the bottom stem and a kemuning bottom tip.

Long, broad and very sturdy blade is still sharp, and has the 3 waves or luks located at the base leaving the top half straight. The perabots or base features are well executed with a prominent belalai gajah or elephant's trunk, and the unusual plain grenengs or fretworks. It also has the base metals attachment to the hilt called the baca-baca made of the same pamor metals as the blade.

Pamor patterns are very interesting with the base having a peak like formation called ujung gunung done in the mlumah technique and above it are pamor adeg or standing pamor that is of the other miring technique.

 Condition: Very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to early 19th century blade with late 20th century fittings.

Length of blade: 18.5".   Overall length: 24.5".
