Keris Bugis Penghulu Luk 5 Gading Mas.
Keris Bugis Penghulu Luk 5 Gading Mas – A very good
and rare example of a keris from the southern Sulawesi regions of Bugis. Handle
in the kerdas form is made of ivory and is finely carved with pierced
through works of floral motifs that needs added mentioning. The ferrule or
selut is made of gold and silver alloy, and has very fine filigree and
granulation works. The top sheath made of finely selected kemuning woods,
is very big and broad showing its Chieftian’s or Penghulu
stature. The bottom stem id also fully encased with gold and silver alloy with
very fine floral repousse works, and an ivory bottom.
Very sturdy blade with prominent spine and 5 waves or luks, has very well
executed base features or perabots, with the sogokan or fullers
going nearly half way up the blade.
Pamor patterns are tight and condense and are arranged in the miring
technique of the unthuk banyu or water bubble variations. It is said to
enhance the owner’s stature as well as popularity.
The blade is also very well tempered, or nyepuh, as seen from the darker
shades of the blade stretching from the tip to above the base.
Condition: Very good condition. Aside from minor patching at the mouth of the sheath, and hairline cracks at the back of ivory hilt, rest is all in very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to middle 19th century.
Length of blade: 13". Overall length: 18.5".
