Keris Bugis Riau Batu Lapak Ulu Gading.

Keris Bugis Riau Batu Lapak Ulu Gading – A fine example of a keris from the southern Sumatran region of Bugis Riau. Finely carved Handle in the Jawa demam form is made of ivory and is having a finely repoussed silver pendoko or ferrule. Top sheath is made of kemuning woods with the bottom fully encased with finely repoussed silver with different motifs at the front and back.

Thick and very sturdy blade is straight but having an arcing profile, and with the typical Bugis hexagonal cross section, it has an overall shape or dapor called sepokal in Malay.

Pattern welded blade with condense pamor arranged in the mlumah technique, and of the wos utah or scattered rice variations. All patterns are unplanned and at the base there is an unplanned pattern forming a semi circle called batu lapak, or saddle stone.
The pamor wos utah is said to enhance the owner's material well being while the pamor batu lapak is said to protect the owner from chaos.

Condition: Very good condition. Aside from minor hairline cracks at the handle, rest is all in very good condition.

Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the early 19^th century.
