Keris Bugis Sulawesi Luk 7 Kulit Semangka.
Keris Bugis Sulawesi Luk 7 Kulit Semangka - Another
good example of a keris from southern Sulawesi regions of Bugis. Handle
in the kerdas form and the top sheath are made of well selected
kemuning woods with flashing grains. Bottom stem is made of angsena
woods with tiger’s stripe grains. A repoussed silver ferrule or pendongko
completes fittings.
Very sturdy blade with 7 waves or luks has the base features or
perabots well executed, and a hexagonal cross section typical of the Bugis
styles.
Pamor patterns are condense, and are arranged in the mlumah technique
with an overall pattern called kulit semangka, or melon’s skin. A peak
like formation at the base is called ujung gunung, and pamor lines along
the edges called pamor wengkon.
The pamor ujung gunung is said to enhance the owner’s status while the
pamor kulit semangka is said to enhance the owner’s material well being
with the pamor wengkon of the protective nature.
Condition: Very good condition. Aside from slight patching at the sheath’s neck joints, rest is
all in very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the middle to late19th century, with new silver ferrule.
Length of blade: 13.1". Overall length: 16.6".
