Keris Jawa Lurus Naga Siluman 509.
Keris Jawa
Lurus Naga Siluman 509 –A
very good and rare example of a keris from the central Javanese regions of
Surakarta. Fittings are in the ladrangan Solo style, with the hilt made
of well selected jati gembol or burl wood, and the top sheath or
wrangka, made from low grade cendana or sandal woods.
Wooden bottom stem is encased with an open repoussed brass stem cover or
pendok blewah. A brass mendak or ferrule with colored glass
profusions completes fittings.
Very sturdy blade with prominent spine having the base features that includes a
crowned dragon at the base called the naga siluman, with the spine
acting as the naga’s body that thins out or disappears along the top.
Pamor patterns are arranged in the mlumah technique and shows very good
contrasting metals selections forming the pattern called kulit semangko
or melon's skin pamor.
The pamor kulit semangko is said to enhance the owner's popularity, while
the naga siluman is said to be able to make the owner invisible.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to late 18th century blade, with late 20th century fittings.
Length of blade: 11.6". Overall length: 18.4".
