Keris Jawa Lurus Sepang Pelet.
Keris Jawa Lurus Sepang Pelet –
Another very good and rare example of a keris from the central Javanese regions,
with the well carved handle made of teak wood, and top sheath or wrangka,
in the gayaman Surakarta styles made from woods with natural
contrasting grains, called pelet belang sapi. Bottom stem
is also made of pelet woods, and is encased with an open plain brass
cover or pendok blewah. A silver ferrule or mendak completes
fittings.
Very sturdy straight blade is rare in that it has the base tapering on both
sides, and is called dapor sepang. It is also using the rare gandik
pogokan as well as a wavy cross piece, ganjar kelap lintah.
Pamor patterns are arranged in the mlumah technique, and are of the
wos utah or scattered rice variations.
The pelet woods used for the fittings are mystically believed to enhance
the popularity of the owner.
The pamor wos utah is said to enhance the owner's
material well being, and the rare dapor sepang is said to enhance marital
relationships.
Condition: Very good condition. Aside from slight
patching at the front of sheath, rest is all in very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the middle 19th century.
Length of blade: 12.6". Overall length: 19.5".
