Keris Melayu Riau Luk 5 Nguku Bima 810.
Keris Melayu Riau Luk 5 Nguku Bima 810 – A good and rare example of a keris from the southern Sumatran region of Malay Riau Lingga. Handle in the unusual and rare upright pistol grip or kerdas form is made from hard and dark ebony woods. Top sheath is made from well selected kemuning woods, with tiger’s stripe grain angsana bottom stem. A finely filigree copper ferrule or pendoko completes fittings.
Sturdy blade with 5 meandering luks or waves and prominent spine. It also has well executed and deep base features or perabots, using the less common nguku Bima or Bima’s claw.
Pamor patterns are condense and are arranged in the
mlumah technique with overall pamor arrangements of the wos utah or
scattered rice variations. All patterns are unplanned or pamor tiban, and
at the base a peak like formation of unplanned pamor tiban is seen and is
called ujung gunung.
The blade is also very well tempered as seen from the darker shade at the top
half of the blade.
The pamor wos utah is said to enhance the owner’s material well being
while unplanned pamor tiban are of the protective nature.
Condition: Aside from sheath’s missing bottom tip and minor
restorations at the sheath’s neck joints, rest is all in very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the early to mid 18th century.
Length of blade: 13.3". Overall length: 16.5".
