Keris Palembang Luk 9 Ulu Garham Gajah.
Keris Palembang Luk 9 Ulu Garham Gajah – A very
good and rare example of a keris from the southern Sumatran regions of Palmebang.
Handle in the jawa demam form is made from the rare fossilized mammoth
molar or graham gajah. Top sheath in the sabit bulan
or crescent moon form, is made from very well selected kemuning woods
with flashing as well as contrasting grains. Bottom stem is made from angsena
woods with repaired bottom tip.
Very sturdy blade with 9 rather sublime waves or luks, has well executed
base features or perabots which is also having the rare kembang kacang
gulu meled;- referring to the elephant trunk like feature, which is not, and
is referred to resemble a treacle of sugar.
Pamor patterns are rare and show a few formations with the base having very
condense peak like pamor patterns called ujung gunung. Above it are pamor
arranged in the trap-trapan technique, with the circumference pamor
wengkon.
The pamor ujung gunung is said to enhance the owner’s status, while the
pamor trap-trapan and the pamor wengkon is of the protective
nature.
Condition: Very good condition. Aside from minor hairline cracks at the hilt and repaired bottom stem, rest is all in very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to late 19th century.
Length of blade: 13.2". Overall length: 17.3".
