Keris Palembang Sepokal Bahari.
Keris Palembang Sepokal Bahari – A very good and
rare example of a keris from the southern Sumatran region of Palembang.
Handle in the relief human figurine style, typical of the region, and top sheath
are made from kemuning woods with natural flashing grains. Bottom stem is
made of angsena woods with tiger’s stripe grains, and a well repoussed
silver alloy ferrule completes fittings.
Very sturdy blade with an angular profile that has an overall shape or dapor
called sepokal in Malay. It also has well executed perabots or base
features, that is using the same forms and features as another form of keris
called the keris Bahari, which share the same forms as the executioner’s
keris or keris panjang.
Pamor patterns are arranged in the mlumah technique with an overall
pamor pattern of the kulit semangko or melon skin. At the base a, a peak
like formation is seen and is called pamor ujung gunung, or mountain
peak. The pamor ujung gunung is said to enhance the owner’s stature,
while the pamor kulit semangko is said to enhance the owner’s popularity.
The blade is also very well tempered as seen from the darker shade on the top
half of the blade, where it is quenched during the tempering process. The
tempering is very well done, that the edges of the blade can lift a coin up with
just a light tap.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 18th, early 19th century.
Length of blade: 11.5". Overall length: 17".
