Keris Sundang Lurus Pedang Kapit.
Keris Sundang Lurus Pedang Kapit
– A
rare example of a long keris from the northern Borneo region of Sulu,
called the keris sundang. Usually of Mindanao in origin, and is rarely
found in northern Borneo as well as the Malaysian peninsular regions. Handle is
made of teak wood or kayu jati, and top sheath is made of kemuning
woods in the form of the sabit bulan or crescent moon form. Bottom stem
is made of teak wood, and is encased with finely repoussed silver bands.
Long and sturdy blade has a few rare features, including the base having a
repoussed silver plate riveted on each side, and this contraption is called
kapit in Malay. Above it are gold inlaying works showing floral tendril
motifs, with a silver attachment of the handle to the blade called the
baca-baca, or asang- asang. In the middle of the blade, two deep
fullers extends to the top where the tip ends unusually at an arc, a lot like a
sword, and hence the term Sudang Pedang, or a sword Sundang.
Pamor patterns are arranged in the mlumah technique, and are of the
wos utah or scattered rice variations.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the blade early 19th century, with late 20th century fittings.
Length of blade: 21". Overall length: 27.6".
