Keris Sundang Melayu Lurus Greneng.
Keris Sundang Melayu Lurus Greneng – A very good and rare example of a broad keris called the keris sundang. Usually of Mindanao in origin, and rarely from the Malaysian peninsular regions, the handle in the cockatoo form is made of kemuning woods with ivory side panels. The top sheath is in the sandang walikat (Javanese) form which is the typical form of Malay Sundang’s sheath. The bottom stem id made of dark ketengga woods with a kemuning bottom tip in the shape of the patat lipas or roaches back. A plain silver ferrule completes fittings.
Long, very sturdy and broad
blade is straight but having a very angular profile that has a term called
sepokal in Malay. The perabots or base features are finely executed
with a the grenengs or fretworks needing added mentioning, and has double
fullers at the base. It also has the base metals attachment to the hilt called
the baca-baca made of silver.
Pamor patterns are arranged in the miring technique, and are of the
adeg or standing variations. It is said to protect the owner from natural
mishaps.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the early 19th century blade with newly made fittings.
Length of blade: 18.5". Overall length: 26.4".
