Parang Nias Ulu Makara.

Parang Nias Ulu Makara - A very rare example of a sword from island of Niaz, Sumatra. Handle of wood and well carved with a makara like feature and a lizard (?) on top of it. Wooden sheath has few plain brass panels, and the very rare ball like attachment which is made of rattan and wooden “claws’.

Very sturdy single edge blade is rather typical of the region, with a pointy tip and the sharp edge along the inner curve instead. Pattern welded not showing contrast and is the norm from the region that prefer less contrasting nickel, but more iron and steel.

Condition: Very good condition.

Age:  Krises and other edge weapons from the region are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century.

Length of blade: 18.8".   Overall length: 26".
