MALAY ART GALLERY'S....House of  Keris

Keris Bugis Riau Luk 7 Patrem.

Keris Bugis Riau Luk 7 Patrem – A very good example of a short keris most probably made for a boy from noble family. From the southern Sumatran regions of Bugis Riau Lingga, with both, the handle in the typical pistol grip or kerdas form, and the top sheath in the tebeng form, are made from well selected kemuning woods with natural flashing grains. Bottom stem is made from angsena woods with tiger’s stripe grains, and a kemuning bottom tip. A well repoussed brass ferrule or pendoko completes fittings.

Very sturdy blade with 7 waves or luks and very well executed base features or perabots, has an overall shape or dapor called carita (Javanese). The smaller sized keris is also called patrem (Javanese) and is either made for a woman, or in this case a boy.

Pamor patterns are condense and arranged in the mlumah technique of the kulit semangko, or melon’s skin variations, which is said to enhance the owner’s popularity.
The selection of metals needs added mentioning, showing few shades of black and white metals with some very contrasting pamor lines that strongly suggest the use of the highly sought after pamor luwu.

Condition: Very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to middle to late 19th century.

Length of blade: 10.8".   Overall length: 13".
