Keris Bugis Sulawesi Luk15 Ulu Ukiran
0514 - Avery good and rare example of a keris from
the southern Sulawesi region of Bugis. Finely and deeply carved handle in the
typical Bugis kerdas or pistol grip form, and top sheath in the tebeng
form are made from well selected kemunning woods with flashing grains.
Bottom stem is fully encased with a well repoussed and thick brass stem cover or
pendok bunton. A well repoussed copper ferrule or pendoko
completes the fittings.
Long and very sturdy blade with rare 15 waves or luks and having well
executed base features or perabots with and overall shape or dapor
called kala wija (Javanese).
Pamor patterns are arranged in the mlumah technique of the kulit semangko or lemon skin pamor. It is said to enhance the owner's popularity.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the middle to late 19th century blade and top sheath, with newly made hilt.
Length of blade: 15". Overall length: 19".
