Keris Coteng Chenook Lurus Pamor Miang 0123.

Keris Coteng Chenook Lurus Pamor Miang 0123 From the southern Thailand region of Patani, Chenook, this extremely rare example has the hilt encased with silver and in the form called the coteng. Rarer than the tajong or kingfisher, but sharing similarities and form, showing NOT a bird, but a squatting figurine with nasal horn, teeth and fangs etc.

The sheath is made from a single piece of well grained kemuning wood without any joints or "seiras" in Malay, with the bottom stem having plain silver bands.

Very sturdy blade is straight or lurus, with plain base features or perabots and an overall shape or dapor called bahari in Malay.

Pamor patterns are forged in the miring technique showing a line at the middle of one side of the blade called pamor lidi, and the "crystalline" or "homogenous" effect seen is called pamor miang in Malay.

Aside from minor chips at the hilts base, and minor dent at nasal horn tip, rest is in very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the early to middle 18th century.

Length of blade: 13".   Overall length: 16.5".
