Keris Melayu Bugis Sepokal Sada Saler
0515 - Another very good example of a keris from
the Malaysian peninsular region with the handle in the pistol grip or kerdas
form, and made from very well selected kemuning
woods, with the base having a buffalo horn encasement. The top sheath or
sampir, in the tebeng form, is also made from very well
selected kemuning woods with natural flashing grains. Bottom stem is made
from well selected angsana woods with a thick brass pendoko or
ferrule to complete fittings.
Thick and very sturdy blade with rather plain base features or perabots having an angular profile called sepokal in Malay. With a thick but flat surface and an angled edges or gusen, the strong Bugis influences in the region is seen, as well as a hexagonal cross section.
Pamor patterns are rather rare with the overall background pamor in the mlumah technique, having a vertical line at the middle of the blade done in the miring technique called sada saler, which is said to guide the owner in times of needs.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century.
Length of blade: 14.5". Overall length: 17.5".
