MALAY ART GALLERY'S....House of  Keris

Keris Melayu Debek Anak Alang 0812.

Keris Melayu Debek Anak Alang 0812 – A very good and rare example of a keris from the northern Malaysian peninsular regions. Handle in the regional variant of the tapak kuda or hoarse hoof form, is made from hard kemuning wood and fitted with a silver alloy ferrule or pendoko. Top sheath in the rare debek form, resembling the more common sabit bulan or crescent moon form is also made from very well selected kemuning wood, with the bottom stem made of angsena wood having a kemuning bottom tip in the less common patat lipas or roaches’ back form.

Thick, and very sturdy blade with swollen base and rather slim, has an overall shape or dapor called anak alang. Slim with minute and very well executed base features or perabots, it has strong similarities with its longer “cousin’ the keris panjang or executioner’s keris, and its shortest “cousin”, the keris bahari.

Pamor patterns are arranged in the miring and are of the adeg or standing variations which is mystically believed to be able to protect the owner from natural mishaps.

Condition: Very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century.

Length of blade: 14".   Overall length: 19.2".
