MALAY ART GALLERY'S....House of  Keris

Keris Melayu Terengganu Luk 9 Pamor 0513.

Keris Melayu Terengganu Luk 9 Pamor 0513 – Another very good and rare example of a keris from the northern Malaysian peninsular region of Terengganu. Well carved handle in the Terrenganu form of the jawa demam called the anak ayam teleng or cuddling chick, is made from very well selected kemuning woods with naturally occurring contrasting grains. The top sheath in the tebeng form is made from very well selected ketengga woods with natural contrasting as well as flashing grains. Bottom stem is made from well selected angsana woods with a well made silver pendoko or ferrule to complete fittings.

Thick and very sturdy blade with 9 waves or luks, and thick prominent triangular spine, has an overall shape or dapor called pandai mamat(?) in Malay.

Pamor patterns are usually not using contrasting from the region, but this examples shows pamor patterns arranged in the mlumah technique of the biji timun or cucumber seeds. It is said to enhance the owner’s material well being.

Condition: Very good condition. Aside from minor hairline cracks at the sheath and hilt, rest is all in very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the middle 18th century.

Length of blade: 13.2".   Overall length: 18".
