Klewang Lebar Sumatran Broad Sword 0322.
Klewang Lebar Sumatran Broad Sword 0322 - A very good example of a broad sword or klewang lebar from the southern Sumatran regions. The buffalo horn hilt is in the typical makara (a mystical creature, in the combination of an elephant, dragon and fish) form and found in most klewangs. Wooden sheath is having well repoussed white metal bands, which are also present at the base of the hilt.
Long, thick and very heavy blade with a single sharp edge along the straight edge, and a broadening top. Right at the base, some minute chiselling is seen showing the profile of a human figurine with head and half a body, and may have aesthetical reasons.
Pamor patterns are arranged in the miring technique
showing vertical formation called pamor adeg or standing pamor, and a
peak like formation at the base called pamor ujung gunung.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the middle 19th century hilt and blade, with 20th century sheath..
Length of blade: 24". Overall length: 31.5".
