Pedang Sabit Batak Sword V.O.C 0322.

Pedang Sabit Batak Sword V.O.C 0322 - A very good example of a sabre or pedang sabit from the central Sumatran region of Batak. The hilt is typical of the Batak's sword, having a pommel at the top and is made from brass, with the gaps present between the blade and the protruding hilt tip, this can also be use as a sword breaker. Wooden sheath with rattan bands and a gold thread woven cloth or songket tied at the top.

Long and sturdy but flexible blade, having shallow mid fullers and a nice sabre arcing profile that ends into a double sharp edge top. There are stampings on both sides of the blade;- "1619" and "VOC", attributed to the Dutch colonial period.

Pamor patterns are not contrasting due to the non present of nickel metals and are arranged in the mlumah technique of the pamor kulit semangko or melon skin variation, which is said to enhance the owner's popularity.

Condition: Very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the early 17th century.

Length of blade: 27.5".   Overall length: 33".

Price:- US$570 excluding shipping.
