Keris Bugis Sumbawa Lurus Sogokan Dwi Warna.
Keris Bugis Sumbawa Lurus Sogokan Dwi Warna A fine and very rare example of a keris from the eastern Indonesian islands of Sumbawa. With strong Bugis influences, the fittings shows with the use of the kerdas or pistol grip handle made from well selected kemuning woods. The top sheath or sampir is also made of very well selected kemuning woods with natural flashing grains. The bottom stem is fully encased with finely repoussed silver with floral motifs at the top and chevron motifs at the bottom half. A well repoussed silver ferrule or pendoko completes fittings.
Very thick and heavy blade has few rare characteristics. Although straight, it
has a slight angle or arcing profile that is called sepokal. The base
features or perabots are also very well executed with the rare black
metal base cross piece or ganjar wulung that is finely chisel with floral
motifs, usually made for high status wear. The thick blade with a prominent
spine also has three deep fullers or sogokans flanking.
Pamor patterns are rare, and show two different patterns on each side of the
blade. One side is forged using the miring technique and shows pattern of the
pamor unthuk banyu or water bubbles. The other side is forged in the
other mlumah technique and shows patterns of the wiji timun or
cucumber seeds.
The pamor unthuk banyu is said to enhance the owners status, while the
pamro wiji timun is said to enhance the owners material wealth.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century.
Length of blade: 14". Overall length: 16.5".
