Keris Coteng Lurus Carita 610.
Keris Coteng Lurus Carita 610 – A very rare example
of a keris from the southern Thailand region of Patani. Handle in the typical
coteng or bird like form is made from very well selected kemuning
woods. Sheath is also very well made using kemuning for the top and
angsana bottom stem. Base of hilt and bottom stem is encased with plain
silver.
Thick and very sturdy blade with prominent semi circular spine or tulang
bulat, having shallow fullers flanking, and very well executed
perabots, with and overall shape or dapor called carita in
Malay.
The blade is also well tempered as seen from the darker shades at the top three
quarters of the blade, and it can lift a coin up with just a slight tap at the
edges. This type of very well tempered blade is also called "brojo guno"
in Javanese, referring to a keris smith, or empu's name.
Pamor patterns are not contrasting, which is the norm from the area,
and from the forging lines the arrangements are of the miring
technique of the adeg or standing
variation.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the middle 18th century blade with mid 20th century fittings.
Length of blade: 15". Overall length: 19.1".
