Keris Malela Luk 5 Ketengga 0514.
Keris Malela Luk 5 Ketengga 0514 -
A fine and very rare example of a keris from the northern Malaysian peninsular
region of Terrengganu or Kelantan. Handle in the typical pistol grip form called
kerdas in Malay, is made of very hard kemuning woods. The top
sheath or sampir is made of the less common ketengga woods having
contrasting and flashing grains. Bottom stem is made form angsana woods
with fine tiger stripe grains having a deer horn bottom tip.
Very sturdy blade with 5 meandering waves or luks has the base features
or perabots, very well executed. The prominent spine and deep fullers are
characteristics of the keri malela.
Made of non contrasting metals, with more and steel without any nickel, the
blade is also very well tempered or nyepuh, and this is seen in the
barker shade on the top half of the blade where it was submerge during
tempering.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century.
Length of blade: 14.5". Overall length: 18.5".
