Badek Sumatra Dwi-Warna Tandok 0911.

Badek Sumatra Dwi-Warna Tandok 0911 – A very good and rare example of a small side weapon called the badek from the central Sumatran regions. Handle is made of buffalo horn and deeply carved in the typical regional form having the lotus flower motifs at the top.. Top sheath is also made of buffalo horn, and is in the form of the relief makara. Bottom stem is made of angsena(?) woods having find silver bands with a patat lipas or roaches’ back buffalo horn bottom tip.

Thick and very sturdy blade with single sharp edge and the base ferrule or metok made one with the blade, having a short shallow fuller at the base with an overall arcing profile.

Pamor patterns are not contrasting as is the norm of the region’s preferences for non contrasting nickel metals.
It shows two different forging techniques, or dwi warna (bi-colored) on each side of the surface. One side is arranged in the mlumah technique with the forging lines showing the arrangements of pamor wos utah or scattered rice, which is said to enhance the owner’s material well being. The other side, and arranged in the other miring technique sows vertical lines of the adeg or standing variations which is said to protect the owner during natural mishaps.

Condition: Very good condition. Aside from missing silver bands and minor patch at the base of hilt, rest is all in very good condition.

Age:  Krises and other edge weapons from the region are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 18th century.

Length of blade: 11".   Overall length: 14.3".
