Badek Sumatra Kakaktua Dwi Warna 910.

Badek Sumatra Kakaktua Dwi Warna 910 – Another rare example of a short knife called the badek from the central or southern Sumatran regions. Kemuning wood handle, well craved in the form of the cockatoo bird or kakaktua, and top sheath in the makara form also made from well selected kemuning woods. Bottom stem is made from angsana woods with a kemuning bottom tip.

Very sturdy blade with single sharp edge and base ferrule or metok made one with the blade, and a small shallow fuller at the base;- typical characteristics of the Sumatran badek.

Pamor patterns are rare and are arranged in the miring technique showing a central vertical line called the pamor sada saler. This is present only on one side of the blade, with the other having no contrasting pamor lines. This arrangement is also called dwi warna or bi colored.
The blade is also very well tempered or nyepuh, as seen from the darker shades of the blade that extends till near the base.

The pamor sada saler is said to guide the owner during hardship.

Condition: Very good condition.

Age:  Krises and other edge weapons from the region are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the mid to late 18th century.

Length of blade: 11".   Overall length: 14".
