Rencong Aceh Perak Suassa 311 – A fine and very long
example of the rencong from the northern Sumatran region of Aceh. The
fittings are fully encased with finely repoussed silver, and having the typical
recong’s characteristics like the bent handle, the blade’s fretworks etc.
subliming infusing the Islamic invocation “Bismillah” i.e. In the name of
Allah.
Very sturdy and still sharp blade is exceptionally long and slender, having a
single deep fuller along the blunt edge, with very well executed base fretworks.
Base ferrule or metok is also made one with the blade, and is encased
with plain suassa or gold/copper alloy.
Pamor patterns are not contrasting as it is common in the region not to use contrasting nickel metals, but stressing more on stronger iron or steel.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises and other edge weapons from the region are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century.
